Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Tucked away in the far southwest of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the country’s smallest national park but a true hidden gem. Covering just 33.7 square kilometers, it forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.Mgahinga is famously known as the place “Where Gold Meets Silver”a reference to its two star attractions: the endangered golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking here offers a more exclusive, intimate experience compared to busier parks like Bwindi, as there is currently only one habituated gorilla family available for tracking. The park’s scenery is nothing short of spectacular, dominated by the three volcanic peaks of Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo. Adventurous travelers can hike these mountains, walk the scenic Gorge Trail, or explore the mysterious Garama Cave, once home to the Batwa people. Beyond wildlife and landscapes, Mgahinga provides rich cultural encounters, especially with the Batwa pygmies, whose traditional forest life and storytelling bring history vividly to life. With fewer crowds, pristine beauty, and a mix of wildlife and cultural experiences, Mgahinga offers a truly authentic and peaceful gorilla trekking adventure.
