Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park, a vast and wild landscape where rugged hills, open plains, and ancient baobabs stretch as far as the eye can see. Known for its remote, off-the-beaten-path safaris, Ruaha offers some of Africa’s best predator viewing, with large prides of lions, elusive leopards, and cheetahs roaming the savannah. The park is also home to huge elephant herds, diverse antelope species, and over 570 bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers. With fewer visitors than the northern parks, Ruaha delivers an authentic and exclusive safari experience.

Both parks are in western Tanzania along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale Mountains is south of Kigoma, while Gombe Stream is just north of Kigoma town, near the Burundi border.
What are these parks famous for?
They are world-renowned for chimpanzee trekking. Mahale is also known for its stunning forested mountains and sandy beaches along Lake Tanganyika, while Gombe gained fame through Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking chimpanzee research.
How do I get there?
Access is mainly by flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Kigoma, followed by a boat transfer to the parks. Mahale can also be reached by charter flights directly to the park’s airstrip.
